Dental Bridges
A dental bridge is a fixed prosthetic device used to replace one or more missing teeth by literally “bridging” the gap between teeth. It restores the function, aesthetics, and alignment of the teeth, as well as preventing other teeth from shifting.
Types of Dental Bridges
- Traditional Dental Bridge
- Structure: Involves creating crowns for the teeth on either side of the gap (abutment teeth) with a false tooth (pontic) in between.
- Material: Porcelain fused to metal, all-ceramic, or metal alloys.
- Ideal For: Patients with strong natural teeth on both sides of the gap.
- Cantilever Dental Bridge
- Structure: Supported by a crown on only one abutment tooth.
- Ideal For: Situations where there is only one adjacent tooth available.
- Note: Less common due to the risk of stress on the supporting tooth.
- Maryland Bonded Bridge (Resin-Bonded Bridge)
- Structure: Uses a metal or porcelain framework bonded to the back of adjacent teeth.
- Material: Porcelain, porcelain fused to metal, or resin.
- Ideal For: Replacing missing front teeth where minimal preparation is desired.
- Implant-Supported Bridge
- Structure: Supported by dental implants instead of natural teeth.
- Ideal For: Patients with multiple missing teeth who want a durable, long-term solution.
- Benefits: Prevents bone loss and offers exceptional stability.
